Do You Find Yourself Asking Comprehensive Development
  • How do we turn this hodgepodge of fundraising initiatives into a real program?
  • What’s the difference between a capital campaign and annual funds?
Comprehensive Development is on-going process that non-profit organizations should devote significant time and attention to on a regular basis. For many, it is the lifeblood of the organization and therefore should receive the same careful consideration as program and service delivery.
Campaign Planning Philosophy
Each of the components of a plan leads to the next. Annual giving helps to identify the donors who will be capable and interested in making major gifts. Major gift donors who have established long-term involvement with the organization are the most likely candidates to make planned gifts. With careful planning and research, McDonald Schaefer Group works with clients to design and implement an integrated and coordinated plan.

A comprehensive development plan will include a series of components that complement one another, including:

  • Annual Giving - the first component in a total program, encouraging the habit of giving among prospective donors. A common form of annual appeal is a personalized, segmented direct mail appeal letter.

  • Major Gifts - the result of a carefully cultivated and developed relationship with donors. Whether for a specific purpose or for operating support, they are gifts of an unusual size, and require a personal, peer-to-peer ask.

  • Grant Writing - provides the basic tools needed to request funds from organized philanthropic foundations and government sources.

  • Planned Gifts - a way for a very close friend of the organization to leave a legacy, most often in the form of a simple will bequest, to support the organization for many years to come. One-on-one conference sessions are usually necessary in the negotiation of a planned gift.
