Grant Writing
Do You Find Yourself Asking Grant Writing
  • Could we get funding from some of the many foundations that exist?
  • How do we do it?
  • How can we be successful in such a competitive process?
Grant Writing involves persuasive letters of inquiry or applications to foundations requesting financial support for particular programs or services that meet stated criteria.
Campaign Planning Philosophy
Grant submittals are another tool for increasing funding for your programs or services. Money in the form of grants is allocated for nonprofit programs and services every year but you won’t receive any of it unless you ask for it. We actively encourage you to do the homework and become aware of grant funding opportunities. We help you do the research and apply for grant funding where appropriate and timely.

As with any other aspect of fund raising, gaining support through grants is a time consuming process involving many steps. Both individually and as a team, the consultants at McDonald Schaefer Group have a great deal of experience and a track record of success with grants. The steps we recommend can involve any or all of the following:

  • Research: using the internet, directories, and personal contacts, we work with you to identify a roster of funding opportunities that are likely to support your agency.
  • Writing persuasive Letters of Inquiry aimed at gaining the funding source’s interest in your submitting a full application. These are not always required, but in many cases the tone, content, and focus of the letter can make a big difference.
  • Preparing the application itself, which usually includes a narrative portion along with support material. This is a critical tool, and it is worth taking the time to do it properly. The narrative must make your case for support, and the support materials must meet the requirements of the funder.
  • Promoting personal follow-up. Whenever possible, we recommend that someone from your organization makes contact with and speaks directly to a representative of the funding source. McDonald Schaefer Group can help prepare the research and presentation materials and training that will give your volunteers the confidence they need.
